Deleting an EV Hidden Message - From the Client

An interesting registry key which not many people know about for the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in is theDeleteHiddenMsgBtnVisible setting.

When the key is added to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ KVS \ Enterprise Vault \ Client, and as a DWORD set to 1, then a new, hidden option is enabled.

This is the option to delete the hidden message, if found, on a folder by folder basis.  It can often be done instead of ‘zapping’ the mailbox, which is something which is done all too often.

The reason for deleting the hidden message is that sometimes it gets out of synch between the end user in Outlook cached mode, versus the online copy of the hidden message (which is what Enterprise Vault writes to)

CA never end of search

I need a solution

We are using EV 10 and CA 10,

I dont know, If I use the service account to manul search(i.e immedaitely), it will run very fast and no issue.

But If I schedule search, although I see all index are finished when search detail.

But in the monitor tab, I see their status still searching, any ideas?

Storage File Watch Error after Collection runs ID 6842

Hi all,

At 10:00am each morning our collection runs begin on each of our partitions. We then get 3 errors over the next few minutes:

All Event ID6842 :

Reason: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

PartitionEntryID: 1D4B44F4DC7129841AD19FAF38B4D8C5C1q10000Evsite

Method: CCollector::CompactSparseCollections

AND

Reason: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

PartitionEntryID: 195398AB5005611419FC3CDB24291FE741q10000Evsite

Method: CCollector::CreateCollection

AND

Reason: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

PartitionEntryID: 195398AB5005611419FC3CDB24291FE741q10000Evsite

Method: CCollector::CreateCollection

 

Anyone got any suggestions, I know from running a quick SQL query the 2 partitions its involving, is it serious?

Can you enable archiving in a mailbox without user knowing is being archived?

Good afternoon all,

 

This is a question post to me by management of the company I work for. They were wondering if it is possible to enable EV archiving for the purpose of pulling mailboxes of active user-much like exmerge used to do with Exchange Server 2003. My company has deployed EX2010 but have a lot of restrictions and they want to pull user's mailboxes using the archiving feature of Enterprise Vault 10. Is it possible to enable archiving in a mailbox without an active user knowing archiving is enable/and that his mailbox is being pulled by the eDiscovery Team? Journaling is only enabled for a couple of user's so that is not an option.

Migrate FSA to different EV Site

I need a solution

Is there any native or 3rd party tool that can migrate FSA data to an EV server in different EV Site? IHAC need to migrate the existing file server as well as the FSA to a new file server and EV server in different AD domain. See if any tool available to migrate the vault partition across and use FSAUtility to recreate the placeholders in the new target file server.

If no tool is available, what is the typical way to perform this migration? Should I need to do a bulk recall to re-inject all archived items back to the file server before migrate to the target? Any other possible options? Please share your thoughts.

Migrating Exchange 2010 SP2 Archiving -> Enterprise Vault 10 archiving

I am looking into and reading the guides on EV 10, we are currently using Exchange 2010 SP2 Archiving but want to go to Enterprise Vault 10 (for various reasons).

What is the process once the EV Server is up and running to get the Exchange 2010 Archives over to Enterprise Vault?

Backup Scripts forEnterprise Vault & Event IDs with Veeam Post Script

Hello,

I have generated the scripts that needed to backup my Enterprise Vault Sites and Storage Groups using the Transform-Backup.PS1.

I have made two scripts, EVPostScript.PS1 which contains the Set-Clear commands to clear all the backup modes.

And I have create a EVPreScript.ps1 which runs via Task Schduler, the EVPreScript contains the Set Backup Mode on the site and on the Storage Groups.

When the EVPreScript runs, it set the Vault and Groups into the Backup Mode and Generates an Event IDs 7060,7059,7058,7319. After that the EVPreScript will invoke the Veeam Backup Job.

When the Backup Success on Veeam the EVPostScript should invoke the Clear- command to clear the Vault and Storage Groups from backup Mode. EVServer doesn't generate Event IDs when it exists even when I put the command maulally to exits the backup mode. It says that successfuly cleared, but no event IDs.

On the other Hand I can see that a Warning in the Event Viewer 41257 "One or more Vault Stores are in Backup Mode"

Any one can help?

Today our Public Folders index volumes are split into 9 ranges causing lots of user frustration as they have to pick between 9 different date ranges when searching. Can these be combined into one?

Sync All Exchange Servers

Hi All,

 

Would it be possible for Symantec to create a "Synchronizes all mailbox on all exchange servers" button or option? Sometimes during testing a issue or trying to resolve an issues it can be a pain to sync all the mailbox in an environment when you have about 20 odd exchange servers. I know there is the automatic sync which can be setup but that can also be a bit of a pain.

Enterprise Vault TechNotes should specify which versions these notes applicable for, because rently we have found some RegKey TechNotes which were effective for older version of Enterprise Vault and doesn't have any effect on Newer version of Enterprise Vault,

Therefore all TechNotes related to Enterprise Vault should specify which versions of EV they are applicable, same as Microsoft KB Article specifies which version of Windows or product the KB article applies to.

FSA and Retention Category

I need a solution

Hello,

I have a EV 10.0.1 and recentley intrdocued FSA with placeholder and modified date policy in place and I have noticed that when I open files from Archive Explorer and modfied the file and save it. the modified date does not change from either the Archive Explorer and from the users client machine. I expect to see EV to recall the file where by removing the placeholder and also save the changes. But this is not the case. is this by design. Is that mean Archive Exploer is ready only access. I know on the Exchange mailbox archivng this is the case where using AE is only for accessing emails not for changing but some how I expected this would not be the case for FSA.

Retention category is the process to control the deletion of archived data. Am I right to beleive that when you make a change of retention category options the new seetings only apply from the date of the change only to the new archived data not to the data that already archived before the change.

Enable Client Based PST Migration - SQL Query

Hello

Since last few days I was trying to figure best way to enable client drive migration for users in bulk mode and only way found was using ADModify which is pretty decent way to do it... Modify an attribute for bulk users & use that for enabling client drive migration using VAC.

While I was working on it today, I stumbled upon "EnabledPSTImport" bit in ExchangeMailboxEntry table and used below SQL query to make bulk modifications:

Update dbo.EnterpriseVaultDirectory.ExchangeMailboxEntry EME

set EnabledPSTImport = '1'

from EME

--Join a custom table which contains user list for migration in display name format

Inner Join dbo.Database.table T ON EME.MbxDisplayName = T.cUserName

where EME.MbxDIsplayName = T.cUserName

After running this query, when I went to VAC, all mailbox entries changed using above were showing as "Disable for client driven", so I guess they did get enable for client driven migration. And the client drive migration enable message isn't sent out using this way.

This was something new and sudden & changed the EnabledPSTImport bit as intended to (and hopefully worked as intended to). So sharing it out and any thoughts around same are welcome in case I did something wrong and this way shouldn't be used.

Old Messages not deleting

I need a solution

I have setup 3 years retention policy on exchange journaling mailbox. The problem is I see messages older the 3 years when I do search on journaling mailbox. Is there a way to check if system is really deleting old messages? I am running EV 9.0.4.

What’s an Enterprise Vault MDC File?

Many people in the Enterprise Vault administration world have heard of an MDC file.  Not everyone knows what it is though..  or what it looks like.  Below I’ll explain and show you.

The MDC file is the Metadata Cache file.  It contains mail messages, these resemble your archived items, but they’re not ‘quite’ the same.  Essentially the folder structure will follow the structure of your archive, and the mails are actually stubs, containing only some of the message metadata, and a short snippet of the message body (no attachments etc).  Another way to look at it is that is your Virtual Vault.  Obviously the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in has lots of code in it which manipulates these items, and presents them to you in such a way that they can seamlessly be your ‘full’ archived items, metadata, attachments and all.

The screenshot below shows you an example of the file:

 

The other important thing to note is that you get the full MDC file always, whereas the content files (the .DB files in the above screenshot – which I’ll cover in another blog post) you may only get ‘some’ of those depending on the amount of space you want Vault Cache to consume.  As I said though, you will always get the full MDC file.

If you take a copy of that MDC file with Outlook closed, rename it to PST and attach it to your Outlook profile you will see that it contains the structure of your archive, and the stub information that I already mentioned:

Compare that with the same ‘view’ when the Outlook Addin is involved and it is truly your Virtual Vault:

EV - how to confirm all clips have replicated between prod and replica Centera

EV 9.0.2

This is a follow up from:

As part of the migration, I want to ensure that all clips have replicated between the old prod and replica Centeras, before we turn on archiving to the new Centeras.

I current have 5 vault stores, 5 partions and 5 Centera pools with the following safety copy settings:

1. Mailbox archiving - After backup (immediate for Journaling)

2. Mailbox archiving - After backup (immediate for Journaling)
 

3. FSA - Immediately after archive

4. Journaling - Immediately after archive

5. Journaling - Immediately after archive

Once the EV tasks are stopped, I need to ensure all clips have replicated between the old prod and replica Centeras.

This is the plan:

1. Check the usage page and confirm "Awaiting Backup" = 0 for all vault stores

2. Run the following SQL query across all vault stores:

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM JournalArchive WHERE Indexcommited = '0'
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM JournalArchive WHERE BackupComplete = '0'

3. Check MSMQ queues: Check the 'A' Queues and 'J' Queues to confirm if there are any items left to be processed

Anything else I am missing? I understand that as we have various safety copy settings, just one check may not be enough to confirm there is no outstanding replication between Centeras.

restoring 100+ mailboxes back to Exchange

we have a customer that wishes to restore a large portion of their mailboxes back to Exchange - i know that we can do this using the export wizard however is there a scripted method or a recommendation if doing a large number of restores ?

Migrating data to new storage and dvs date

I need a solution

We're migrating are vault store data from an MSA to EMC Isilon and currently using em copy program provided by EMC to copy the data to the isilon. That is all going fine but we noticed that the modified date on the .dvs files change to when the copy was performed. Will the date changing on .dvs files affect indexing, or retentions or anything like that? does the .dvs file date have any bearing on any vault processes?

Granular Restore

Hi. I'm new here and learning about EV.

I have a costumer that wants to backup an old storage vault and then get some free space in his storage.

I want to know if it´s possible after this backup, make a granular restore from a e-mail of a user.

I´ve read this topic and seems like it´s impossible to do. Not even with Netbackup?
