Index6 failed on EV9 with EventID41021

I need a solution

Hi there!

I´m working on a problem, that i can´t solve:

Win2k3r2, EV 9.0.2 - singleserver - FSA (no mail)

6 Month ago, the customer removed theire EV-Environment quick-and-dirty on theire own after robocopy-ing all files to another Partition.

Now they discovered, that some files are corrupted and has the offlinebit set.

removing the offline attribute with common symantec-tools was not sucessfull for all files, so they restored the Whole EV-Environment, but cant use the same volume, as the "original-files" from one of the archives are on another LUN.

All other archives can be accessed and archive explorer shows the files and they can restore, but  only one (the one who moved from F$ to I$) are not acessable/searchable.

This was the point, where i got called and discovered, that the index6 is failed.

Rebuilding the failed index leeds to sucess for about 3 days - files was serachable and restoreable from archive explorer and points to the newly created F$-drive. Suddenly the browsing wasn´t able and the index was failed again with EventID41021

What may possibly happens to failing again? -> What should i do now?

hi

hope someone can help. I have rebuilt our EV test lab 9.0.2 with DA and everything is working fine apart from IIS. I cannot access any pages - http://localhost/enterprisevault/search.asp etc. I get the error

Restore Information from VaultStore

Hello to all,

Anybody knows if it is other way to recreate or restore a massive information from a VS than FSAUtility or Export to PST. 

I'm having some problems with FSAUtility -t and the export to PST it's not a viable option, because I need to restore all the information to a new share in the network recreating all the files and folder estructure.

eDiscovery in Clearwell: Custodian names not visible in Analysis & Review

As we use EV, the default settings for Custodian Assignment in the collection task did not associate a custodian with the resulting documents.

I went back and selected to, 'Create a new custodian using the archive's email adddress' under 'If no match is found:' for each of my 5 collections. and re-ran them for custodian assignment only.

I can now see Custodian Data in the Collections > Analytics chart/table.

Custodian data also appears in the Collection Sets Charts.

Without a clear idea of what else needed to be done, I have tried to re-run post processing and to process without discovery.

I still do not see custodian metadata in the Analysis & Review section however.  Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Unable to Archive Exchange Mailbox

I need a solution

I was having trouble archiving content from an Exchange 2010 mailbox using EV9. To troubleshoot I used a "Run Now" job but nothing happened.

Watching the message queue I briefly saw an entry added to the A3 queue but it disappeared immediately. No events recorded in the event log.

I started a DTrace of the ArchiveTask and re-ran the "Run Now" job and the below entries were logged:

Investigating the mailbox further and noticed it had a failed mailbox move request status. I removed the move request and now the mailbox content is being archived.

Not sure I understand why a failed move mailbox request causes archiving issues, the mailbox was available throughout.

Any insight or further information is welcome.

Enterprise Vault Search (EVS) - Advance Search Custom Fields

Like previous versions, Enterprise Vault 11.0 also allows power users to perform search on custom properties. In the new version due to enhanced UI, search on custom properties has become more user friendly. You can now perform search on more than 1 custom field, to be specific Enterprise Vault Search (EVS) allows maximum of 9 custom fields, 3 each for Date, Text and Number Fields. By default this feature is not enabled, to enable Custom Fields click on the User Preference and navigate to the Advance Search tab. Place a check mark against "Custom Fields" and then click on Done.

To perform a search on a custom field go to the Advance Search and click on the search property field drop down and select a Custom Field.

You need to enter exact property name defined in Enterprise Vault (a useful list can be found here) and appropriate operator and, of course, a search criteria. By default the Custom Property will not appear in the results pane until you add the property in the customized column (refer to my blog on Custom Columns for more information on that)

EX2010 Journal Mailbox archiving - DR

Hello all,

I'm drawing a blank, and need some reminder. Exchange is 2010, EV is 10SP4CHF2

We have 2 Exchange-servers. EX1 and EX2. EX1 is prod, Ex2 is DR. EV is configured to archiving journalmailbox on EX1 (i.e. task points to EX1)

The JournalDB is NOT replicated to the EX2. If EX1 goes down for maintenance, I am correct in saying Journal Archiving will no longer work.

Q1 - If the Journal MAILBOX is moved manually to a JournalDB on EX2, will the existing task continue archiving from that mailbox, even if the task is for the EX1 server?

In the 'setting up exchange archiving', it is written:

Note: When you have completed the configuration of Exchange Server journal archiving, Enterprise Vault directly targets the journal mailbox. For this reason,
if you need to move the journal mailbox to a different Exchange server in the same Exchange organization, there is no need to reconfigure journal archiving.

I am staying in the same organization. I see however that the TASK throws an error saying "Could not access Exchange Server. The dispenser will queue the current item and sleep for 60 seconds."

I believe I need to have a Journal Archiving task for both EX1 and EX2, and possibly also in EV need to 'move' the Journal Mailbox definition from EX1 to EX2.

Or, I can create a 2nd Journal Mailbox on EX2 (in EV), and reconfigure Exchange to start using that one for the period in which EX1 is down.

Anyone has an explanation, or point me to a KB/Manual?

Do you use PowerShell with Enterprise Vault?

Powershell appears to be the admin scripting language of choice nowadays and we have been gradually introducing support for our own Enterprise Vault specific cmdlets over the past few years and releases. However, it can often be the case with product enhancements, that these small but useful changes may well pass you by and the evolution of Powershell for Enterprise Vault is one that may well fit that criteria.

With the release of Enterprise Vault 11, the documentation team were tasked with producing a guide to the various available PS cmdlets and the fruits of their labour can be found here - http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7347

So, if you have not had the chance to take a look at this, it is worth a read as there may well be the answer in there to automating one of those time consuming admin or reporting tasks that you need to perform with your Enterprise Vault environment on a regular basis.

If you are already using any of these cmdlets in your environment, then we would love to hear why and how here on this blog so that we can see the benefits of these enhancements and understand their deployment in the real world.

We will try and show some useful examples of own usage of these cmdlets in future blogs as well.

Exchange 2013 and missing EVPM filters

Some problems require the help of a cup of decent coffee to sort out, especially those ones where things magically disappear for no apparent reason….such as EVPM filters set on the Deleted Items folder of Exchange 2013 mailboxes.

 

When you set a filter via EVPM, it stores the details of the filter in an item in the associated contents of the mailbox. As it's in the associated contents, the users won't see it but the archiving task will be able to find it and apply it.

 

We also use the associated contents of the Deleted Items folder for temporarily restoring items to view via OWA. Under normal circumstances, the OWA extensions will remove those items when the user closes them, but if for example, they don't close the item whilst connected to the network, then those temporary items may be left behind.

 

To mitigate against this, the archiving task checks for such items which are over 2 hours old when it processes the mailbox, and removes them. This is based on a custom MAPI property, the Restored Date, added to the item when it is put there. Prior to Exchange 2013, asking MAPI for all items with a Restored Date older than 2 hours ago returned only those items with a Restored Date of the correct age.

 

Exchange 2013, however, not only gives all items with a Restored Date older than 2 hours ago, but also returns all items which don't have a Restored Date at all. One example of which, if it exists, is the EVPM filter for the Deleted Items folder. The end result is that every time the archiving task runs against an Exchange 2013 mailbox, it removes the EVPM filter for the Deleted Items folder!

 

A little tweak made in 11.0.0 CHF2 ensures the archiving task checks the item does actually have a Restored Date before removing it, and the EVPM filter in the Deleted Items folder is safe once more.

EV11 and BE2014 Tape Vault

Hi all,

Recently we have purchased Enterprise vault 11. We are currently trying to work out “what make it tick”. So far so good.

Now, I would like to be able to integrate it with Backup Exec 2014, which we already own.

We need to keep most of our files for around 15 Years

The ideal solution would be to Archive to Disk for 3 Months, and then have the archive moved to a tape vault for the reminder of the days. However all this needs to be readily available.

So my question is!

How do people access their data once it’s on a tape, just by clicking on a place holder?

Enterprise Vault 11 Cumulative Hotfix 2

Hot off the presses is Enterprise Vault 11 Cumulative Hotfix 2. Weighing at 185 Mb for the download it consists of a series of changes that have been made to Enterprise Vault 11 following from it's original release.

As with the first cumulative update it's essential to read through both the read me document, and, the installation instructions.  If you don't then, like me, you might forget to run the database upgrade script that is required after the installation.

Outlook Addin Not Enabling

I need a solution

I have a user on one computer that has an issue with the EV11 Outlook addin (CU1) enabling properly.  He is enabled for EV, can access the web interface just fine, and can access his vault store and see the EV ribbon in Outlook 2010 on another computer.  However on his primary machine it will not enable.  If we manually enable it, the addin immediately disables.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the client and done a reset.  If I update the LoadBehavior registry key in the HKCU to 3 it stays like that until the next time Outlook opens, when it changes back to 2.

There are no logs to see in the Appdata\Local\Temp folder for EV, nothing in the Windows logs, the Outlook log shows lots of addins loading, except that one.  

Any thoughts?

Login/Logout Audit Log; Strong/flexible password Restriction for Security

We need to have the following information pulled from server logs:

 - Every login, logout, timeout entry.

 - Login attempts whether or not successful

 

The Activity Report is not sufficient, see below:

- Appliance level login audits, reason being the if the user has successful credentials, and for any reason has no case assigned how do we confirm/validate the login/logout activity.

- System Managers/Superuser logins are not associated with any cases, their activity cannot be recorded unless they access the case. That also restrict our auditability.

- Attempts of unsuccessful logins, for sure, need to be tracked for security purpose.

- Archived cases activity cannot be pulled without having to restore those, again not an efficient solution to get the data.

 

Along with that we would also like better password restriction, not just length restrictions.

When move operations cross two Active Directory domains, a one-way trust is required for the moves to proceed. The destination domain must trust the source domain.

I need to know how to configure the trust

source domain 2008R2

destination domain 2012R2

Move Archive cross two Active Directory domains have other requirements?

Removing an unused 'Ready' partition

Hi,

In EV9 I have 2 unused partitions in a 'Ready' state that I'd like to remove, I can't find any documentation is it simply a case of right-click delete in the VAC?
