The Famous 'Store In Vault' Button

Probably the most famous ‘button’ in the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in is the ‘Store in Vault’ button. I have seen some customers who don’t enable it, but by and large most customers do for all of their users.

But do you know what it actually does?

Well the first thing it does is to check if the item which has been selected is already an archived item, because you can’t archive an already archived item. There are also checks to make sure it’s in the right message store, because again you can’t archive items this way in a PST file.  If it’s not already archived, then it gets marked with a timestamp, and the icon changes to a pending item.

When that’s done, a HTTP request is sent to the Enterprise Vault server which tells it a number of things, including that timestamp. Eg:

The Enterprise Vault server, specifically the ArchiveTask process, will check the indicated location, and find items with the same timestamp, and archive them.  It’s passed this information from W3WP and AgentClientBroker processes

If all goes well, the item will get archived, and indexed.

This all works well, and pretty quickly. But there are somethings to think about:

* It doesn’t work brilliantly when you have selected hundreds, or thousands of items. In other words, it’s not meant for a mass-archive operation.
* It overrides the policy relating to the message classes which are allowed to be archived (though you can use the ManualArchiveMessageClassCheck registry key to force the policy to be applied)
* It shouldn’t replace the normal scheduled archiving of the mailbox.

I’m sure there are other tales-from-the-trenches that people can tell with the ‘store in vault’ button (or funny stories as well!).

Outlook 10.0.4 plugin for EV

I need a solution

Testing installing the EV Outlook 10.0.4 plugin on a WIN7 64 bit machine using a package with SCCM2012, the machine is now running EV 9.2. We are using the MSI for this. We send the install down to the machine and it installs , but shuts down Outlook. when I go into the event log I show one event with the following, not sure why it will not restart Outlook?

Application 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE' (pid 4860) cannot be restarted - Application SID does not match Conductor SID..

Can EV Server Settings Migration Wizard be used for EV10-11 migration?

I need a solution

I have used the EV Settings Migration Wizard a number of times so far to migarte 32bit EV9.0.1 and above servers to 64bit EV10.

I have an upcoming EV10 to EV11 migrations (both platforms 64bit 0 from win2008 to win2012).

Has anyone used the wizard for that?

Does it supppor 64bit to 64bit and EV10-11 migration?

Copying archived emails to Public Folders

I need a solution

Hi all,

Let's think about a user that copy an archived email from his mailbox to a public folder that is accesed by other users. I have several questions regarding this:

- I assume that this copy generates a shortcut pointing to the same original archived email, correct?

- The archived email in the PF only can be opened (restore) by the originalk user owning the archived email, unless I give permissions to everybody in the user's archived mailbox throught the EV console. Is that right?

- And what happen if that user leaves the Company and we remove his archived mailbox? Nobody will be able to open that archived email in the PF because the content doesn't exist anymore?

Restoring Archived Items Issue when Migrating Archive Tasks

Hi All,

We have recently split up an EV environment for a customer into 2 mailbox archiving and 2 journal archiving servers.

There are 2 active Exchange Servers and each mailbox archiving server is responsible for one Exchange Server.

Our issue is, when the archiving tasks are all on EV server 1, everything works perfectly.

When we move the migration task for Exchange 2 to EV server 2, everything works except the restore function on these mailboxes (all mailboxes on Exchange server 1, processed by EV server 1 work fine).

There is little given from any logs. In the IIS log we get 503 errors when users attempt to restore and

from the client trace.

It may be also worth noting that all IIS action is happening on EV Server 1 even though the users are being processed by EV Server 2.

Any ideas on where I can go from here?

Limiting number of Archiving task

I need a solution

Hi Guys,

We are currently archiving 10000 plus users that are currently resigned, problem is it eats a lot of CPU usage and I want to limit the number of archiving task in move archive status. example is I have added 500 users on the archive task, but I want just to limit the running task to 50  so the 450 will remain on qeue to avoid high CPU utilization.

EV11 Search Page click open response

I need a solution

When you do a vault search with the new EV11 search interface and then click an archived items to open it, IE prompts you if you want to open the item or save it.

Does anyone know if there is any way to make it open directly instead of prompting first?  The prompt is an unnecessary extra click in this case. 

I checked every where in the desktop policy but could not find anything.

It seems to me this would be an IE thing, but there should be someway around it.

EV11.0.1 Search - Date format

I need a solution

We have users in multiple countries, yet all of our users are getting US date format in the search results.

As we only give users access to the vault via this mechanism, we are limited with options.

I found this post from June, but no solution was found.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?


windows xp service pack 3 and ev 11

I need a solution

I would like to know if Windows XP service pack 3 is supported if EV server version is 11

On the compatibility charts it is mentioned that EV 11 Client plugin is not supported but EV 10 Client plugin can be used.

 
In this case, can we have the Windows XP client OS connect to the EV 11 server with the 10.0 client plugin?

Hi All,

My Enterprise Version is 10.0.4 chf3 and file server agent version is 10.0.4

i need to upgrade file  server agent to 10.0.4 chf3 or it will work with same version.

issue cant take reboot of file server due to bussiness impact.

Reduce the index volume

I need a solution

The vault services stopped due to the index volume running at out space . We have added more space and are now up to 500GB .

That’s a lot of space being consumed, this seems very variable, how can I figure out why it’s grown/growing so much ?

Is there anything that can be done to reduce them ?

EV Index location

I need a solution

Hi,

Please help me to understand about the EV index folder locations.

In my EV 10.0.4 servers we have configured EV index location using a mount point which inside have 8 sub folders, the concern here is out of eight folder only one folder is in use for indexing and rest 7 other folders are empty for last one year.

I understand that the EV will use all these 8 folders randomly but in my case only one folder is in use and all others are empty.

Please let me know

Is this cause any issue?

EV11 Shortcuts not updating

I need a solution

Hi,

We recently had a consultant upgrade our EV to V11. It seemed to be working OK, we could see about 2 million items go through the archived / awaiting backup screen since the update - however, we have noticed that no ones shortcuts in Outlook seem to have updated.

Is there a task or shedule I need to check?

Also, as a side, is there any day to day admin I need to do with the server that I sould know about with V11?

EV11 - Web Search Page - Timeouts and Archive Group questions

When I web browse to our EV Search Page, I first get asked about an Email Archive Group - then, once I ignore that, I keep getting timeouts, instantly, every time I try and select a folder.
 
The 'Email' archive group has more than 15 archives.
You can configure new archive groups to organize archives and optimize your search experience.

Deleted vault vanished but event 7113 still occurs??

Hello,

Somewhat weird problem:

Deleted user entry from database using query:

USE EnterpriseVaultDirectory
DELETE
FROM ExchangeMailboxEntry
Where MbxDisplayName = 'Lastname Firstname'

Put the vault of this user to Deleted state using VAC.

For a while the 7113 event started to show:

Following archive could not be deleted as it contains items that are on hold, or their retention category does not allow deletions, or a compliance device retention period prevents them from being deleted.

Archive Name = Lastname Firstname 

Archive Entry Id = ***************************************************************

Total items on hold = 6359

Now that I investigated this issue after several weeks:

 - There is no entry for this user in the Directory database

- The archive has vanished from the list of archives in VAC

BUT this event is still occurring in the event log and this query produces a result:

USE EnterpriseVaultDirectory

SELECT * FROM Archive

WHERE ArchiveStatus = 4

It produces a row with this user info...

This article would possibly been useful if the archive still existed in the VAC archive list but it's not there:

  1. Within SQL Management Studio run the following:

    USE EnterpriseVaultDirectory
    SELECT *  FROM  Archive
    WHERE ArchiveStatus = 4

    This will generate a list of all of the Archives set for Deletion.
     

  1. Check the results and make sure that the ArchiveName column contains the Archive/s in question. Take note of the RootIdentity for each Archive.
     
  1. Within SQL run the following SQL query to change the status back to Available:

    USE EnterpriseVaultDirectory
    UPDATE Archive
    SET ArchiveStatus = 1
    WHERE ArchiveStatus = 4 AND RootIdentity = 'RootIdentity taken from step2'
     

  1. Refresh the view in the VAC and make sure that the vault status for the archive/s have changed from Marked for Deletion to Available.
     
  1. Restart the Storage Service, delete the archive/s again and Dtrace the StorageDelete process.
     
  1. Refresh VAC and the archive should now be gone, although it may take a few minutes depending on the size of the archive.

What do I do to get rid of the event 7113 now that the archive itself appears to be already be deleted...?

"A folder with the same name already exists"

I need a solution

Hi,

I had an associate get the "A folder with the same name already exists" when trying to delete an item from their local Vault Cache.

I followed https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/error-when-deleting-itemsfolders-virtual-vault and renamed the Deleted Items folder and hey presto everything works.

Anyone understand what is happening and why would the rename helps?

Items in centera from a deleted archive

Hi Guys

This is a more of a hopeful "somebody help" then a request for help!!

Basically......a public folder email thats been archived and replace by a shortcut, has had its archive deleted, meaning the mail is readable from outlook but the mails attachment is not available for very obvious reasons!!

By chance a user has come along wanting the attachment....always the way!!!!

Although we NEVER delete anything from the centera the archive i can confirm is gone from EV.

Is there a way...complicated or not that an orphaned shortcut can be reconnected with its data on centera even though the original archive was deleted.

as a secondary question....whats the best way of telling a user the data is gone :)

I know there are many factors involved in storage expry, in our environment the expiry rate is anything up to 1500 items per hour.

Can anyone weigh in with what expiry rates per hour you are seeing?

Enterprise Vault Journaling with Exchange Server 2010 DAG

Using Enterprise Vault 11 with Exchange 2013

How do I create a Journaling Task so it will work with a DAG? e.g., Journaling mailbox is currently active on Serv1, I want to ensure EV is able to still pickup the journaled items when the mailbox becomes active on Serv2.

I've read http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag... but when creating a target I can only point to mailbox servers and not a DAG or CAS array.
