The event serves as the final event of Speedweeks and is sometimes referred to as "The Great American Race" or the "Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing." It is held the last Sunday in February. From 1971-2011, it was associated with Presidents Day weekend. Because of inclement weather conditions during the scheduled 2012 race, the Daytona 500 was rescheduled to Monday night, February 27, 2012. It was the first time in the 54 years of the Daytona 500 that the race was not only postponed, but ran as a night race. Due to the race starting at 7pm EST on Monday and a two hour red flag period, the race ended Tuesday, February 28 at 1am EST. It was also announced that the race will stay on the last weekend of February for its 55th running, and take place on February 24, 2013.
The flag officially drops on FOX Sports’ 2013 Speedweeks coverage with the newly named Sprint Unlimited at Daytona, live and in prime time on Sunday, Feb 23 at 8:00pm ET, followed by live coverage of Daytona 500 Qualifying, Sunday at 1:00pm (ET)
Coverage of the Daytona 500 on FOX begins Sunday, Feb 24 with Fusion Evolution presented by Ford, a 30-minute special at 11:30am ET, followed by the traditional one-hour NASCAR on FOX pre-race program, live at noon ET from the Hollywood Hotel, Fox Sports’ state-of-the-art mobile studio located in the Daytona International Speedway infield. Host Chris Myers is joined by two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip and his brother, NASCAR Hall of Fame driver and three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip. At 1:00pm ET, Darrell joins NASCAR on FOX race announcer Mike Joy and Daytona 500-winning crew chief Larry McReynolds in call the 55th running of the “Great American Race.
