After recently upgrading to EV 10 I really like the new HTML rendered Archving Task reports, Accessible from the button in the Task Reporting tab in EVAC.
By copying all the report links to a group of bookmarks in the EV Admin's workstation browser they can all be opened in one go, checked through to see exactly what has happend.
However, in a scenario with Exchange configured with Multiple DAGs and Exchange Servers in Active / Passive mode, there are times when Archive Tasks have no Targets. It appears that when there are no targets the Archving Task just doesn't run. No Report, No Event Log entries nothing.
If there is a period when Exchange databases are failing over fairly freqently this gets very confusing.
The EV administrator is faced with Archiving Tasks not running at random, which could be interpreted as a fault with the tasks.
It then requires an analysis of Exchange Database current and past locations to establish if this explains the NON-Operation of the Archiving tasks.
Therefore it would be much more helpful if the Archiving Task ALWAYS RUNS, even when it has no targets. It could "wake up" discover it has no targets, generate the Event log entries (Ideally with an Event ID that Says "Task Ran as Scheduled but had no targets to process" ) AND a Report with a similar explanation, AND most importantly it should set the Reported Task Status to "No Targets"
Now when the EV Admin inspects the Archiving Task on a regular schedule, he will see a consistent list of Run Times for each.
The Task Status Column in the Task Summary will now indicate one of "Running""Completed""Failed" or "No Targets" so the EV Admin can see exactly what is happening, and can easily determine if his Archiving tasks are behaving as expected or REALLY have problems.
Hopefully this would not be too difficult to implement and would certainly make the EV Admin's task easier.
